In a powerful display of unity, over 100 Xaverian Brothers, Associates, faculty members, school administrators, retirees, former Brothers and partners in mission from across the world, from Belgium to The Congo, Rome to the U.S., gathering virtually via Zoom on Wednesday, April 1, 2020, for an international prayer service for all affected by the Covid-19 crisis. Engaging community, even in the midst of separation, is what the Xaverian Brothers network offers the world, especially in a time where people are seeking this experience of community more so than ever. The service connected folks in ways they could never be connected otherwise, and despite the pandemic, they were grateful for a unique opportunity. The text from the service, entitled “A Prayer During Times of Uncertainty” was posted online and shared widely and included thoughtful questions for reflection.
“Although I was unable to participate, except through my prayers, it is a true tribute to the Xaverian Brothers, that this audio-visual world-wide communication sent the message that the Brothers are in the forefront of addressing the horrors of the Coronavirus,” commented Brother Clement Kowalchuk, retired educator at Xaverian High School in Brooklyn who now resides at Xaverian House, Danvers, via Facebook.
“God of mercy, during these days of the pandemic, we come to you with hope,” read the service’s closing. “Ease our anxieties, calm our fears, and help us to trust in your loving care for all your creation. Challenge us to remember to read the signs of the times so that we might discover anew our ministry in the world and our call to serve You.”
