“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Mt. 11:28)
Advent and Christmas season have always been my favorite times of year. When I was younger, I thought it was because of presents, good food, and Christmas music on the radio. As I reflect now on what this season represents, I realize it’s my favorite because Advent is a time of rest. Rest, in this context, is not merely physical but also spiritual. I am more acutely aware of God’s presence in my life during the Advent season. A Church filled with classic Christmas hymns, a room full of family and friends enjoying a meal together, and the opportunity to take time away from the burdens of life help me feel God’s presence, strengthening and renewing my spirit.
Rest, in any context, is essential to our well-being and enhances our abilities. We find peace and rest when we bring ourselves to God during Advent and accept His invitation to be with Him. This Advent season, reflect on where and with whom you find peace and rest in order to better recognize and feel God in your life. Use the coming of Jesus to restore and serve as inspiration to live a more meaningful and joyful life.
Heavenly Father, help us feel Your presence during this Advent season and give us rest. We pray that, as we prepare for Christmas, You restore our strength and empower us for a new day and the year ahead. Amen.
