“Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous deeds.” PS 98:1
Studying theater taught me to see stories from multiple perspectives, focusing not only on characters but also on setting. This week’s Gospel begins with the setting, “The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth.” I encourage us all to enter into our own Nazareth and be present to God’s words in our lives.
Admittedly, I confront some personal challenges when thinking about Mary’s response to Gabriel in Nazareth: “May it be done to me according to your word.” Gaining understanding when surprised and confused can be a struggle. Mary presents a beautiful witness to true trust. Mary is our guide to learn to better hear and embrace God’s messages to us.
This Advent, I hope to sit in my own Nazareth and listen to the Lord. I hope to hear my continued call and answer ‘yes’ to each. I hope to allow the business of the world to settle so I can embrace the beauty, joy, and love woven into my life. I hope to follow Mary’s example and find peace through trust – even in trying times.
We ask you Lord to guide us with open hearts to answer ‘yes’ to Your call.
Let us enter our own Nazareth and continue to find hope, joy, peace, and comfort in You.
Listening to the words of Ryken we trust in You today:
“O Lord, I cannot understand your ways, but I must adore them.” Amen.
